Sad news for the boxing community in the Philippines. ALA Promotions and Gym permanently closes after 35 years of service. The announcement was made on Facebook. According to the post, the company’s future was greatly affected by the coronavirus pandemic and the shutdown of their long-time broadcast network partner, the ABS-CBN.
ALA Promotions was well known for their Pinoy Pride boxing series that ran for more than 40 events. ALA was also the home of Filipino champions Donnie “Ahas” Nietes and Milan Melindo. Other popular Filipino boxers also have their roots in ALA before spreading their wings in the international stage.
Despite the closure, ALA Promotions was thankful for the support of the people around the globe during their three decades of service.
On the other news, Asian Boxing Championships, which was supposed to take place this year was postponed and will be moved in 2021.
While it was pushed back due to the pandemic, India will still has the right to host the said event.
Different countries from Asia are expected to participate next year including boxers from the Philippines.
Meanwhile, Pound-for-pound King Canelo Alvarez is reportedly eyeing to take the vacant WBC super-middleweight belt on his next fight. Canelo was supposed to fight Billy Joe Saunders, however, conflicts arises as Saunders found guilty for misconduct on his viral video.
The WBC super-middleweight belt was vacated after its former owner David Benavidez failed to make the weight on his recent fight against Roamer Alexis Angulo.
While Benavidez won the fight, he won’t regain the belt, thus, it is now up for grabs.
However, promoter Oscar Dela Hoya of the Golden Boy don’t want Canelo to fight Benavidez for the vacant belt. Benavidez is unbeaten on 24 wins with 20 via knockouts. Nonetheless, he is still young compared to the veteran Alvarez.
Progress for the possible fight has yet to be released as of the posting of this video.
